Tom Hardy has set the record straight about his scrapped Venom and Spider-Man crossover with Tom Holland. Hardy played Eddie Brock in three solo Venom movies.
The actor as recently quoted by The Playlist that he "got as close as [we] could possibly imagine getting" to sharing the screen with Holland, before seemingly blaming studio politics for it never happening. While Sony has the rights to Spider-Man and leases the character out to Disney to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the studio tried to set up Venom and other Spidey-adjacent characters in a separate cinematic franchise.
Tom Hardy Clears Up Why Spider-Man and Venom Crossover Was Scrapped
Marvel’s Newest Multiversal Entity Sets the Stage for the Spider-Verse’s Biggest Confrontation
Marvel Comics is setting up the Multiverse's biggest confrontation by introducing a whole new character who effects the entire Venomverse.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Hardy backed away from suggesting that disagreements between Sony and Disney were the reason why his Venom and Holland's Spidey never met on screen.
"That’s kind of moved on from a very simple quote that I said specifically about my children watching Venom," he insisted. "It’s hard to explain to a young child why their favorite superheroes can’t be in a film together and that’s such a shame. And we almost got it, but it didn’t happen, which is the truth. It didn’t happen."
The actor went on: "We almost got together because I remember being in the Spider-Man movie and you know it was connected, and it just didn’t happen. The trilogy is now over and it didn’t happen. So, it didn’t get killed by anything, it just didn’t happen. I’ve been misquoted there. People get excited about anything Venom or anything to do with superheroes and stuff and it’s sort of taken on another life. I just want to be clear that I didn’t say that."

Disney did tease the potential for Hardy and Holland meeting, when Eddie Brock briefly appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home and left a bit of the Venom symbiote behind in Peter Parker's universe.
As for whether the crossover could still happen, Hardy insisted: "There are always talks, but that doesn’t mean that things manifested. There’s a future where these things will continue to be talked about until something is realized and I’m sure it will be at some point, but it just didn’t happen with me."

Hardy completed his trilogy as Eddie Brock with the release of Venom: The Last Dance in 2024, and it was followed in Sony's Spider-Man Universe by Kraven the Hunter earlier this year. Because the Venom trilogy were the only financially successful entries in the SSMU, it has been reported that Sony is no longer developing feature film projects in the universe.
At New York Comic Con last year, Hardy spoke about the legacy of his time as Venom and what the role has meant to him.
"The love of doing storytelling, and acting, and playing, and world building, is just so special," he said. "I was so blessed to be able to do that. It's bittersweet, but it's sweet too, like, 'Wow, what a great time!' [...] Yeah, of course [Venom will always be a part of me]. I got to breathe a voice into him."
EXCLUSIVE: Eddie Brock Returns as Venom to Take on the Spider-Verse
In a CBR exclusive preview of next week's Web of Venomverse: Fresh Brains, see how an alternate reality Eddie Brock returns to lead a team of Venoms
- Sony originally announced a Sinister Six movie, featuring some of Spider-Man's iconic villains, in 2013 but it never came to fruition.
- The studio later planned a project with Bad Bunny playing wrestler-turned-superhero El Muerto, though the star ultimately pulled out due to scheduling conflicts.
- Other canceled projects in the SSMU included Hypno-Hustler with Donald Glover, a Spider-Woman movie directed by Olivia Wilde and a Spike Lee-directed Nightwatch adaptation.
Holland will next be seen in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, his fourth solo MCU entry as Peter Parker. There is still potential for Holland's wall-crawler and Hardy's Venom to meet up in 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars (though neither have been cast yet), which could bring together characters from various Marvel-related cinematic universes.
